Roads - Municipal New A new road should be built from the community hall to the airport road minimizing traffic on the main road

Sports and Recreation

Asset Action Required Problem Summary
Swimming Pool New Without a swimming pool and swimming program people do not have the opportunity to learn valuable water survival skills. These skills are important for people who make at least part of their living harvesting fresh and salt water resources.
Playground - Hamlet New Lack of safe places to socialize and play indoors for 8 months each year.
Arena Renovate Renovate arena - There is a need to upgrade the lighting & heating system, the public washrooms and lobby areas Solar panels should be considered to reduce energy costs. In addition the public can only access the arena by stairs. More storage area within the building is also required.

Water/Wastewater

Asset Action Required Problem Summary
Utilidor New Establish Utilidor
Wastewater Treatment Renovate Replace or repair sewage lagoon - Our current sewage lagoon is being repaired and is anticipated to be completed in November 2016
Water Treatment Plant New Construction to start in 2023. Our  community water plant  doesn't meet the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines and therefore the Community has been on a BWA for the last three summers.  This year a temporary Filterboxx WTP was put in place, however there were adverse water sample results, water output issues and system deficiencies. Basically the system as designed couldn't meet the demands of the community.  A year round permanent water treatment plant is therefore urgently required by the community and should be given priority as recommended by the REHO.

Municipal Infrastructure

Asset Action Required Problem Summary
Parking Garage - Hamlet Renovate Renovate existing 5-bay garage by adding a cement pad/rubber on the floor.
Parking Garage - Hamlet New Build new 5-bay garage to accommodate Hamlet vehicals and equipmnet. At present may remain parked outside which makes them susceptible to vandalsim and freezing in the winter.
Hamlet Office New A New Hamlet office/ complex is long overdue. This new office complex would be a two storey building with sufficient offices for both Hamlet, community organizations and GN employees. The main floor would have indoor recreational areas, a canteen/fast food outlet, and a Council Chamber/general meeting area. The building should have solar power to reduce energy costs, and a back up generator so it could also be used as an emergency shelter.
Parking Garage - Hamlet Remediate Excellent sites have been identified for a new parking garage and fire hall. Thes sites involve Lot 1, 5, and 7, Block 5. They are all contaminated and require remidiation. The old power plant on Lot 7 needs to be removed. The are is currently a health risk to the community.
Fence - Snow New Snow fencing is required due to heavy snow accumulation problem around the community. particularly in the Itivia area.
Workshop New Build new combined carpentry workshop
Hamlet Office New Presently the Hamlet Office is in an old recycled school building which has inadequate office space. The GN and other organizations also depend on the Hamlet for their office needs.
Fire Hall New The present fire hall is old and costly to maintain  due to its poor structural condition.   Existing Fire Hall no longer meets the qualitative and quantitative Capital standards.  A new fire hall will also give us more parking bays for essential service vehicles, which will be lacking with the purchase this sealift of a new water truck. if it modestly renovated it could function as a parking garage. The new Fire Hall needs to park an ambulance the Hamlet acquired in 2021.
Land - Development/Planning New Whale Cove has no supply of crushed gravel. A supply of crushed gravel is important to maintain existing roads in town, and to and from the town to the airport, and to build a new sub division to accommodate a legal survey completed in 2024. The survey provides one commercial lot, and about 30 residential lots. This is all toward the Nunavut 3000 plan as we are expecting 30 units by 2030.

Airports

Asset Action Required Problem Summary
Terminal New Construction to start 2022. A New Airport Terminal is  needed. Snow Removal Equipment Renovate Airport operations has no D6 Cat for maintaining the airstrip & the 10K road to the community.. The airport is the lifeline of the community.
